It was a cool, gray, damp day and I arrived early at the church to test the lighting for photography. Inside all was lamentably dark but three people were practicing carols in crisp, clear voices. I set my camera to 'ISO auto' in the hope of being able to record something, however grainy, of a traditional, Sussex Christmas service.
The church soon filled and tiny candles were lit, their gentle glow saving the day for me. Children, dressed in extraordinary seasonal outfits were nervous but excited, self conscious but oblivious to my camera.
Songs were sung and the children performed the Christmas story, retold since Doomsday in this church and with a modern, humorous slant today. After prayers, worshippers walked to the House for hot punch and mince pies and the children went home to bed, filled with memories and still excited.
