John was a professional photographer, apparently with an impressive collection of medium and large format cameras, until disagreements with a business partner led to hard times and eventually, a late night job at a pub. Disillusioned, directionless and despairing, he walked out of his job, leaving all his belongings behind and headed for Brighton.
Arriving at Brighton, John planned to just keep walking - into the sea. On Brighton beach, he was intercepted by a local churchgoer who explained Jesus to him. He committed his life to God and shortly afterwards, was given a full time job as an Estate worker.
I met John earlier today while photographing trees in the fog. In the stillness, at the end of a long forest track, he was busy stacking wood, contented and very happy.
